SQL Databases

A SQL Databases is the place that one or more programs holds your data. That is all. It is were you save it and it is where your reports or other process get the data. Almost every programming language available today can use a SQL database. This include both Web based on Windows based systems.

For the most part only the programmer needs to know about the SQL database. There are many ways to look at databases, but the most important thing to ask, what you are using it for?

If it is stand alone or being used by one or two people and the amount of data is not large, then MS Access has a nice SQL database what will work fine.

But if you plan to grow or you have lots of data or you want to have reliable and fast remote access to your data, then you want to use one of the many client server SQL database.

Once you cross into the Client Server database world there are many many choices. Some very costly, some free. (One thing to remember is that a free database is not completely free, you still need to pay for the time to set it up and program it.) You want to constantly ask, what do I need this for? The purpose of the database is ultimately to help provide a safe, reliable place to store your data. It is suppose to save you time and money.

Will there be millions or rows of data? Or just a few thousand?

How many users will there be? Hundreds of thousands, or just a dozen or two? How critical is the data? Can you afford to lose a days worth? An hours worth or none?

The more you want the more it will cost. It is that simple.
